RE: 988 - National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number to call for a mental health crisis or any type of emotional distress
As of July 16, 2022, when you call, text or chat 988, you will be connected to trained counselors that are part of the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline which includes a network of 200 crisis centers nationwide. This service is available in multiple languages. Counselors are trained to listen, provide support, and direct the caller to the appropriate resources depending on the circumstances.
988 is free, confidential, and accessible 24/7 for individuals needing support or concerned about an individual struggling with mental health issues.
Whereas 911 is intended for the dispatch of emergency services related to medical, fire, and police, 988 aims to connect individuals in psychological distress with crisis services specializing in suicide prevention and mental health.
