The Council of University of California Emeriti Associations (CUCEA) is a consortium of the
Emeriti Associations of the ten University of California campuses. Established in 1987 to
provide a forum for intercampus cooperation and to give unified voice to emeriti interests at the
systemwide level, CUCEA officers meet bimonthly to share information regarding issues related
to Emeriti benefits and updates with various working groups, committees, and the Retirement
Administration Services Center (RASC) staff. CUCEA leadership also meets monthly with
CUCRA leadership (Council of University of California Retiree Associations) to develop and
maintain effective communication with the University of California Office of the President
(UCOP). The Chair of CUCEA serves as an ex-officio member of the Academic Council
Committee on Faculty Welfare (UCFW).
The Joint Benefits Committee is the Select Committee of CUCEA and CUCRA representatives
that addresses issues of concern related to retirement and health benefits of members and
prepares reports on those matters for discussion and resolution at the semiannual Joint Meetings
of CUCEA, CUCRA, RASC, and the Provost and other members of the Office of the President.
Campus CUCEA representatives attend the semiannual Joint Meetings, which are held in
October and April and alternate in hosting location between a northern and a southern campus.
UC, Santa Barbara will host a CUCEA meeting in the spring of 2023.
CUCEA has a website that contains a wealth of information about its activities, history, and links
to resources. The website includes the Joint Benefits Committee reports that document the
advocacy issues that CUCEA addresses on behalf of Emeriti with UCOP, current and past
inventories of Emeriti activities, and the report of the 10th Inventory of University of California
Emeriti Activities (2018-2022), which documents Emeriti productivity tantamount to “A Virtual
Eleventh Campus.”
