Performance Evaluations

Core Performance Evaluation Guidelines

Why Performance Evaluations?

The Core Performance Evaluation process assists supervisors and employees in evaluating performance, assessing training and development needs, recommending merit increases, and documenting individual performance.

When Are Performance Evaluations Supposed to Happen?

Generally speaking, written evaluations should happen at least once a year. For probationary employees, written performance evaluations should ideally happen once during probation and once at the end of probation.

How: The Core Performance Evaluation Process

There are 3 steps in the evaluation process:

  1. Planning

At the beginning of each evaluation period, the employee and supervisor review the employee's major responsibilities as stated on the job description and discuss performance expectations for the coming year using the performance factors described in the Performance Factor section of the evaluation document. Reference to the prior year's evaluation and job description may help guide discussions and provide continuity.
  1. Informal Progress Meetings

Periodic meetings throughout the year can provide an ongoing "reality check" for both parties in terms of clarifying general expectations, performance of particular assignments, and planning for future work.
