UC Furlough/Salary Reduction Plan
On July 16, 2009, the UC Regents approved a one-year system-wide furlough/salary reduction plan for UC employees. From September 1, 2009 through August 31, 2010, included employees will be required to take from 7 to 26 furlough days—amounting to a salary reduction of 4 to 10 percent—based on the employee’s full-time salary level (see table below). This plan was the result of extensive input from the UC community and was designed to preserve retirement and leave accrual benefits.
Who is included for furlough/salary reduction
- All full- and part-time UC employees, including, but not limited to, non-represented staff (career, partial-year career, limited, per diem), represented staff and academics*, Academic Senate faculty, and non-Senate academics.
* Implementation of the plan for union-represented employees will be subject to collective bargaining.
Who is EXCLUDED from furlough/salary reduction?
- Academic and staff employees whose pay is entirely funded by research and extramural funds (government and private contracts and grants). For those with salaries that are partially funded from extramural funds, the exclusion will apply to that portion of their salary, and they will receive pro-rated furlough days.
- Student employees, including graduate and undergraduate students
- Postdoctoral scholars
- Foreign national employees working pursuant to H (excluding H-4) and E-3 visas
- Employees working reduced hours under the START program if their reduction is already equal to or exceeds the percentage reduction for their respective pay band
