- Academic Appointment
- All academic titles, including ladder faculty & academic student titles such as teaching
assistants, tutors, readers, graduate student researchers.
- Career Appointment
- A career appointment is an appointment established at a fixed or variable percentage of time at 50 percent or more of
full-time, which is expected to continue for one year or longer.

- Collective Bargaining Unit
- Contract Appointment
- A
contract appointment is an appointment established at a fixed or variable
percentage of time for a definite period. Terms and conditions of employment
are specified in a written employment contract.
- Equity Increases
- Salary adjustments to solve inequity caused
by internal and external factors.
- External/Open
Recruitment
- The advertisement of a
vacant position on a local, regional, or national scale.
- FOC
- Federal
Occupational Code
- Great Applicant
- An applicant who has been interviewed,
identified in OACIS as one of the top candidates for a recruited position
and/or who may be a strong candidate for other positions on campus.
- Internal Recruitment
- The advertisement of a vacant position on the
UCSB campus and/or UC System-wide only.
- Limited Appointment
- A limited appointment is an appointment
established at any percentage of time, fixed or variable, during which the
appointee is expected to be on pay status for less than 1,000 hours in a
12-month period.
- Modified Merit
- Across-the-board increases for employees who
received at least satisfactory or better performance evaluation.
- MSP
- Management & Senior Professionals
- New Position
- A newly-funded vacant position.
- Open Range Structure Adjustments
- Adjustments solely to the pay structure and
affect an individual's pay only if the employee's salary remains below the new
minimum, after the merit is applied.
- PSS
- Professional & Support Staff
- Reclassification, Downward (PSS Salary Grades)
- The movement of an employee's current
position to a different class or salary grade having a lower salary range
maximum is termed a downward reclassification.
- Reclassification, Lateral (PSS Salary Grades)
- The movement of an employee's current
position to a different class having the same salary range maximum is termed a
lateral reclassification.
- Reclassification, Upward (PSS Salary Grades)
- The movement of an employee's current
position to a different class or salary grade having a higher salary range
maximum is termed an upward reclassification.
- Recruitment Type
- How a position was advertised (e.g.
External/Open, Internal, Waiver).
- Referral Source
- How
an applicant learned about the UCSB job opportunity (e.g., newspaper ad,
website, job fair, employee referral, etc.).
- Replacement Position
- A vacant position previously occupied by a
UCSB employee
- Separation
- Any separation from employment status.
- SMG
- Senior Management Group
- Students (Casual/Restricted) Appointment
- A
casual/restricted appointment is an appointment which is reserved for a regular
student of the University of California. Such an
appointment retains the designation casual/restricted regardless of the percent
of full time or the duration of the appointment.
- Temporary Reclass
- The temporary assignment of a majority (over 50%) of duties into
a title which carries a higher salary maximum is defined as a temporary upward
reclassification. This type of reclassification will require a temporary job
title code change. These appointments must be for a minimum of 4 weeks with a
maximum of one year, unless an extension is approved by Human Resources up to a
maximum of two years.
- Temporary Stipend
- An administrative stipend
may be paid to an employee in a non-represented, exempt title who is
temporarily assigned responsibilities of a higher level position or significant
duties not normally a part of the employee's regular position.Stipends for employees are appropriate when
increased responsibility lasts for one month or longer with a maximum duration
of one year. Stipends beyond one year require approval of Human Resources.
- Time to Hire
- The number of consecutive calendar days
between the job posting date and the date that the job offer was accepted.
- Time to Start
- The number of consecutive calendar days
between the job posting date and the employment begin date.
- Turnover
- Measures the rate for which employees leave a
company.The number of total separations
for the year divided by average monthly employment for the year (annual
turnover).
- Waiver of Recruitment
- The appointment of a person to a vacant position
without an external or internal recruitment.
